Brazilian satcom pirates on 255.550 playing sound effects of barking dogs and growling animals.

Tuesday evening (May 17th) I happened to run across strange transmissions on 17196 kHz USB. There was an unidentified person breathing very heavily and moaning… almost as if they were pleasuring them self over the radio. This bizarre activity went on for a good 15-20 mins.

Reception wasn’t great here in California and I suspect the signal was originating from the Asia/Pacific region. Who and what their purpose was, we’ll never know, but I must say this was definitely one of the strangest HF radio transmissions I’ve heard in a while.

Here are a couple of audio clips that were recorded. Headphones are recommended if your in a public setting.

Here is a second audio recording of this bizarre activity.

Here is another screenshot and audio clip of HAARP. This was recorded on March 28, 2011 from my location in SoCal. Frequency is 5800 kHz.

Audio taken from 5800 kHz around the same time.

Last night HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) was up on 3250 kHz and received very well here in California. It was the first time I have been able to watch it on the SDR waterfall and it was pretty interesting to say the least.

Here are 2 screenshots from HDSDR. (Click for larger view)

Below is an audio clip of what some of the HAARP tones sounded like.

The Vietnamese numbers station has returned on 10255 kHz USB. The station was first reported early last year on the IRC channel #wunclub and was active until September 2010. It can usually be monitored here on the west coast starting at 1600z. A well respected UTE monitor that goes by the handle “Token” has been following the Vietnamese station closely and has compiled a wealth of information on his website: VTN, the Vietnamese Numbers Station

For those interested, below is an audio clip from this morning’s broadcast.

On 266.850 it’s not uncommon to hear Russian telephones. On most nights this can be monitored from the west coast on UHF SATCOM with the antenna pointed to the PAC region. I am only able to hear one side of the conversation.

Anyone that monitors UHF SATCOM has most likely heard the Portuguese speaking Brazilian’s that pirate the US military satellites. Tonight they were obviously drunk and must have been doing their own version of American Brazilian Idol. I can’t understand a word but it sounded pretty funny.

6837 Whale Sounds

Here is an oddity from last night. I have read about “feedback/whales” stations on various newsgroups, but this the first time I have picked one up.

I monitored some odd sounding data bursts/scrambled voice on 8935 kHz in LSB mode this evening. Following the encoded message, a male voice could be heard reading letters phonetically. Hmmm…

Update 8/12/2010 – Better audio sample posted below. I have been informed these comms are possibly from a tuna fleet in the Pacific. I also monitored clear voice comms that further confirms this theory.
